Abstract: During the last decade, the World Wide Web has evolved greatly and a number of advancements had taken place. These advancements had resulted tremendous improvement in human life and had made significant advancements in education sector as well. Moving from Web 1.0 to Web 2.0 is one of such major advancements and has resulted fast, convenient, real-time access to knowledge and has enhanced collaboration capabilities. Currently studies show that there is only a limited number of research related to application of Web 2.0 tools in education sector and had highlighted the criticalness of the same. As the foundation for such studies in the local context, this study was planned to explore how Sri Lankan undergraduate and postgraduate students of the IT stream use Web 2.0 tools as an educational aid and to suggest a framework to improve the usability of Web 2.0 tools for educational purposes. Subjects form both private institutes and government universities were examined in this study and a few factors has bees studied to reveal some important findings such as the current usage of such tools, for what purposes they are being used, what are the reasons that influence students to use them etc. At the end a framework was developed to improve the awareness towards the educational usage of Web 2.0 tools with the expectation of improving the application of Web 2.0 tools for educational purposes. It is expected that this study would return a number of benefits to tertiary students and would enable the students with knowledge and facts to take the best use of Web 2.0 tools when it comes to education.
